LEE’S SUMMIT QUILTER’S GUILD
2010-2011 BLOCK OF THE MONTH

Welcome to Lee’s Summit Quilter’s Guild 2010-2011 block of the month. My goal was to design a quilt that would entice both beginning quilters and the more advanced quilter. I was also striving for a design that would catch your eye. There are 18 blocks in the quilt. The four corner blocks are the same and block 2, you will make two, or you can choose which one you’d like to make a 2nd one of.

A photo of the center [which is now completed] will be posted on the blog and once I get the borders on, a photo of the finished top will also be posted there.
I will have more color choice ideas at the next meeting. And I encourage anyone making the quilt to bring their blocks to each meeting after the new block is posted and we will take a group photo each month and post our progress on the blog.
The finished quilt will be approximately 84” x 104”.

Background fabric [for blocks only]: 2-1/4 yards
Medium/light prints for blocks: 1 yard total [2 or 3 different prints]
Medium to dark prints: 3-1/2 yards total [10 to 14 different prints]
1-1/4 yards for sashing
1-1/4 yards for setting triangles
2-5/8 yards for borders
3/4 yard for binding
I am working on a pieced border so you may want to wait on purchasing your border fabric but if you want to keep it simple and not piece your border you may go a head and purchase your fabric now. If you choose to make your quilt with the setting triangles and the borders the same fabric, add the two amounts together.
Go to your stash first and pull out fabrics. Pull from scraps. 2” to 6” scraps can be used.
Some color suggestions:
Black tone on tone print for background and bright colors.
Kansas Troubles fabrics with a tan/gold background.
Soft pastels with a creamy background or white on white.
Batiks either a dark background or a light background with jewel tones or softer colors.

Smaller quilt options:
A 13 block quilt set on point. It can be made with 13 pieced blocks or 9 pieced blocks and 4 spacer squares.
With 6” outer borders it would finish at about 60” square.

Blocks can be set in a traditional setting of 4 blocks across and 5 blocks down. You would need to make 2 more blocks for this setting. With 2” sashing, 2” inner borders and 8” outer borders, it would make a quilt about 74” x 88”.
Want it smaller? 3 blocks across and 4 blocks down with 2” sashings, 2” inner border and a 6” outer border would make a quilt approximately 60” x 74”.

9 Blocks, set on point with spacer blocks [67” x 67”]:
3/4 yard ~ background fabric for blocks only
6 to 8 ¼ yard or FQ of various prints that contrast with your background fabric and each other [lights to darks]
1-3/8 yards ~ spacer blocks, corner blocks & setting triangles [this may be the same fabric as your background]
½ yard ~ inner border
1-1/4 yard ~ outer border
5/8 yard ~ binding

13 blocks, set on point with sashing [75” x 75”]:
1-1/4 yards ~ background for blocks only
6 to 8 1/3 yard prints that contrast with your background fabric and each other
1 yard ~ setting triangles [this can be the same as the background fabric]
7/8 yard ~ sashing [this can be the same as the background fabric]
5/8 yard ~ inner border
1-1/2 yards ~ outer border [1-7/8 yard if you want to cut borders length of fabric, also enough for binding]
5/8 yard ~ binding

12 blocks set 3 across and 4 down with sashing [56” x 70”]:
1-1/4 yards ~ background fabric
6 to 8 - 1/3 yard cuts of various prints that contrast with your background fabric from lights to darks
½ yard ~ sashing
1-1/3 yard ~ outer border [1-3/4 yards if you want to cut borders the length of your fabric]
¾ yards ~ binding

20 blocks set 4 across and 5 down with sashing [70” x 84”]:
2 yards ~ background fabric
8 to 10 – 1/3 cuts of various prints that contrast with your background fabric from lights to darks
1-1/3 yards ~ sashing
5/8 yard ~ inner border
1-1/2 yards ~ outer border [or 2-1/8 yards if you want to cut borders length of fabric]
¾ yards binding
